Patrick Gamez earned his PhD in Organic Chemistry from Université Claude Bernard Lyon I, specializing in Enantioselective Catalysis. After postdoctoral research in organometallic and bio-organic chemistry at the Max-Planck-Institut and Université de Strasbourg, he joined Leiden University in 1999, leading research in biomimetic oxidation catalysis, copper-based cytotoxic complexes, and metal-organic frameworks. Since 2010, he has been an ICREA Research Professor at the University of Barcelona, where he founded the Nanoscience and Bio-Inorganic Chemistry (nanoBIC) group, recognized for its significant contributions and training over 60 researchers. With 261 publications (h-index: 60, >15,190 citations) and 93 conference talks, he is president of the Spanish Bioinorganic Chemical Society, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and serves on the advisory board of Inorganic Chemistry Frontiers. He was also an Associate Editor for RSC Advances.
Research interests
His current research focuses on developing innovative therapeutic and diagnostic tools based on metal complexes for treating cancer and amyloid diseases. In particular, he emphasizes the light activation of prodrugs to enhance treatment selectivity and efficiency. Additionally, his work explores the use of nanoparticles as drug carriers, drug delivery systems, and enhancers of the photophysical properties of coordination compounds.
