Jose Luis Araus Ortega

Full Professor of Plant Physiology, at the University of Barcelona (1993) and Professor ICREA Academia (in 2013 and 2018). Research stages at the University of Georgia (US), the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA, Syria), the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA, UAE), the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI, Panama), the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT, Mexico). He was a National Seconded Expert at the Directorate-General for Research of the EU (Brussels) and Principal Scientist at the Global Maize CIMMYT. He is and has been PI of several international projects and co-author on more than 300 publications in SCI and SSCI journals, with an h-index (Google Scholar) of 90, and the recipient (2008) of the Friendship Award (China). Coordinating evaluation tasks  at the European Research Executive Agency and Associate Editor in several International Journals.


Research interests

  • Research on ecophysiological traits and phenotypic tools to use in crop breeding and precision agriculture, with special emphasis on remote sensing and stable isotopes.
  • Photosynthetic C and N metabolism, abiotic stresses and productivity in cereals and other crops
  • Paleoreconstruction of the agricultural conditions in the antiquity
